Join Dr. Jennifer Sweeton to explore EMDR modifications for complex and developmental trauma, critical for nuanced client care. Learn why complex trauma networks, often marked by negative cognitions like “I am worthless,” require a tailored approach, starting with resourcing (Phase 2) before Target Sequence Planning. Dr. Sweeton will introduce Somatic Targeting for pre-verbal trauma, using sensations as targets instead of memories. Also, attendees will learn how to “inch along” memory by memory, starting with EMD for titration and emphasizing attunement. Take away strategies to adapt EMDR for complex trauma, ensuring safe, effective treatment for clients with deep-rooted relational wounds—no rigid protocols needed!

What You’ll Learn:

1. Identify Complex Trauma Presentations:
Recognise patterns of complex trauma, including attachment wounds and chronicabuse histories.

2. Adapt EMDR Protocols for Complexity:
Learn how to safely modify standard EMDR phases to accommodate complex presentations and maintain client safety.

3. Target Somatic Memories:
Explore techniques to identify and process somatic components of trauma, enhancingresolution of body-held distress.

4. Balance Stabilisation and Processing:
Apply strategies to integrate stabilisation work while maintaining effective traumaprocessing for complex clients.

Jennifer Sweeton

Dr. Jennifer Sweeton, PsyD, JD, MS, MA is a clinical and forensic psychologist, best-selling author, and internationally recognized expert in trauma and the neuroscience of mental health. She completed her clinical training at the Stanford University PGSP Consortium, with additional education in neuroscience at Stanford, Harvard, and the University of Kansas. She also recently graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. Dr. Sweeton has trained over 30,000 mental health professionals in evidence-based trauma therapies, including EMDR, and is the author of several books, including Trauma Treatment Toolbox. She is known for translating complex neuroscience into practical tools clinicians can use to help clients heal.

Agenda

AGENDA

  1. Lecture & Brief Discussion (60 min) –  Learn how to adapt EMDR for complex trauma, apply somatic targeting for pre-verbal wounds, and use titrated processing to ensure safety and effectiveness—practical strategies to balance stabilisation and trauma resolution for lasting client outcomes.
